Charleston Legal Access is excited to share that we recently partnered with HALOS, a nonprofit organization providing services to kinship families (blood relatives) to ensure that kinship caregivers have access to legal counsel and services regarding custody of their kinship children. The goal of the program is for kinship caregivers to obtain legal custody of the children involved where the parents have agreed to transfer legal custody to the kinship caregivers. CLA is looking forward to working with HALOs to assist kinship caregivers and fill a need in our community.

Charleston Legal Access is Charleston's first nonprofit, sliding-scale law firm. We do not provide free legal services, but we will work at a price that those of moderate means can afford. Hourly rates are determined on an individual basis by a client's income and family size. Our initial screening and phone consultations with an attorney are completely free. In-person, 1-2 hour case consultations and limited assistance sessions are available for a flat fee of $50-$100.
