CLA welcomes Denver Tanner as Intake Manager and Legal Assistant

We are thrilled to welcome Denver Tanner (they/them) as our new Intake Manager & Legal Assistant.

Denver recently graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in political science. They are the first open LGBTQIA+ transgender hire at Charleston Legal Access. Denver’s preferred pronouns are they/them.

Denver recently partnered with the College of Charleston, Charleston Pride, and Alliance for Full Acceptance to celebrate national Transgender Visibility Day. They aspire to attend law school in New York City or Washington D.C. in the future. During their time as an undergraduate, they participated in multiple mentorship programs such as Humanities and Social Sciences LEAP program which empowers minority, first-generation, students. Additionally, they have been awarded multiple scholarships including Inaugural Ketner-Crunelle LGBTQIA Endowed Scholarship, Hibernian Society Scholarship, Alexandra-Dengate Scholarship, and College of Charleston Merit Scholar.

In 2019 Denver interned for Evan Guthrie Law Firm. Attorney Guthrie published Denver’s article ‘Covid 19 and Women’s Rights How are these two things related?’ in Pre-Law Land. They also interned for Allie Menegakis in South Carolina for Criminal Justice Reform. In 2019 Denver interviewed and shadowed Michele Forsythe at the Charleston County Family Court.

When asked ‘Why CLA?’, Denver shared “I am excited to be working at the first and only sliding-scale nonprofit law firm as I am passionate about making a positive impact on our community. I hope to one day open my own nonprofit law firm too.”

Fun fact about Denver: Denver spent five months living in Trujillo, Spain during a study abroad trip at the College of Charleston. During this time Denver lived with a Spanish-speaking host family and traveled across the country and to Lisbon, Portugal.

Please join us in welcoming Denver to the team!

Charleston Legal Access is Charleston's first nonprofit, sliding-scale law firm. We do not provide free legal services, but we will work at a price that those of moderate means can afford. Hourly rates are determined on an individual basis by a client's income and family size. Our initial screening and phone consultations with an attorney are completely free. In-person, 1-2 hour case consultations and limited assistance sessions are available for a flat fee of $50-$100.

With client fees only covering 15% of our operational budget and a rise in demand for services, we are seeking like-minded partners to support our cause. Help us expand access to justice and legal representation by making a tax-deductible donation below.
