The Charleston Legal Access family mourns the loss of our founder, Sally Newman, who passed away on August 16, 2019, at the age of 36 from osteosarcoma. Sally was a visionary force whose love and empathy for humankind propelled her to the front lines of the battleground for social justice. Determined to bridge a critical gap in the justice system, Sally started Charleston Legal Access, South Carolina's first and only sliding scale, non-profit law firm to serve the working class. As a result of Sally's innovation, courage and persistence, CLA has helped hundreds of clients and has preserved over $1.5 million in assets through our representation for the working poor, disabled, elderly and others on limited incomes since its founding in 2016.

In lieu of flowers, Sally’s family requested donations be made to Charleston Legal Access or Sarcoma Warriors SC in her honor. Information about a celebration of Sally’s life will be announced at a later date.
