Communications and Development Associate (Part-Time, Onsite with potential for Hybrid)

Position Overview

The Communications and Development Associate will play a key role in amplifying CLA’s mission through compelling storytelling, donor engagement, and creative communication strategies. This part-time, onsite (with potential for hybrid) position offers the opportunity to work on both the creative and operational aspects of nonprofit management, supporting the organization’s visibility and fundraising efforts.

About CLA

Charleston Legal Access is a nonprofit, sliding-scale law firm dedicated to closing the justice gap by providing low-cost, quality legal services to individuals who do not qualify for free legal aid but cannot afford private attorneys. Our firm specializes in civil, housing, and family law, while also engaging in broader access-to-justice initiatives, such as reducing eviction rates in South Carolina through our Housing Court project.

Primary Responsibilities

Communications (Approximately 30%)

  • Keep CLA’s website updated with current events, blogs, and language.

  • Plan and create 2–5 weekly social media posts for Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, including drafting content, posting, and monitoring engagement in both English and Spanish.

  • Update and maintain CLA’s YouTube channel as needed.

  • Design and produce printed and digital materials such as brochures, flyers, business cards, annual reports, and donor letters with the support of the Director of Development.

  • Write blog posts, success stories, and other content that highlight CLA’s impact.

  • Draft and distribute email and mailed communications to donors and clients.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining the organization’s communications calendar.

    Development (Approximately 70%)

  • Draft and send donor thank-you letters and general communications.

  • Support planning and promotion of fundraising campaigns and events.

  • Maintain accurate donor database records, includes gift entry

  • Tracking of client stories.

  • Work to help support events including coordination of logistics for events, including auction, guest lists, materials, and volunteer management.

  • Assist with outreach campaigns, promotional materials, and community engagement efforts.

  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to strategic discussions on fundraising and communications.

Qualifications

  • Preferred bilingual in written Spanish.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Experience or willingness to learn with social media management and digital communications.

  • Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Canva), basic website editing (Squarespace) and knowledge of Fundraising Databases (Network for Good/Bonterra) is a plus but not required.

  • Interest in nonprofit communications, fundraising, or community engagement.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a small, mission-driven team.

Details

  • Hours: 20 hours per week, generally flexible within 9 AM– 4 PM (Monday–Friday)

  • Work Location: Onsite with potential to Hybrid at 1816 Success Street, North Charleston, SC, with occasional evening or weekend events across the Tri-county area.

  • Compensation: Paid hourly

  • Growth Opportunity: Potential to expand into a full-time role based on performance and budget.
